ALBANY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
In 2011, New York State passed legislation requiring insurance coverage
for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a complex developmental disorder
that affects one in 88 children in the United States. With this
legislation, New York joins 30 other states that have implemented laws
to assist families with managing the complex coordination of care
required for children with ASD.
To help health plans address this new legislation, Magellan Health
Services' Chief Medical Officer for Behavioral Health, Gary M. Henschen,
M.D., will present "Autism Service Providers: Developing a Treatment
Team" at the New York Health Plan Association's Autism Mandate Seminar
on July 31, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hotel Albany. The
presentation will outline professional criteria and quality standards to
include in administering a provider network for the treatment of ASD.
Dr. Henschen will discuss the importance of team development to promote
integrated care.
Magellan Health Services Inc. (NASDAQ: MGLN) has been managing care for
individuals with autism since 2008 through a program called Magellan
Autism Connections®, developed in accordance with the
American Academy of Pediatrics practice guidelines. Autism Connections
helps payers, providers and families manage the complex clinical care
needs for individuals with ASD, a challenge that has become increasingly
important as legislation dictates specific requirements for care.
"The proper treatment for ASD requires a collaborative team of
specialists who can provide the full spectrum of care to the child and
his or her family," said Dr. Henschen. "Magellan's goal is to help
health plans formulate a strategy specific to their own states'
requirements to manage a comprehensive network of specialty providers
and community resources in order to provide high quality, affordable
care."
