ConjuChem Biotechnologies Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of novel peptide based therapeutics. The company has developed proprietary core technology platforms known as Drug Affinity ComplexTM ( DACTM ) and Preformed Conjugate - Drug Affinity ComplexTM ( PC-DACTM ) which have been designed to address the longstanding challenge of protecting peptide drugs from rapid breakdown in the body.TECHNOLOGY:The DACTM technology platform allows ConjuChem to covalently bind modified peptides to albumin, the most abundant protein in the blood, following subcutaneous injection. These newly bonded constructs retain most of albumin's favorable properties, such as extensive distribution throughout the body and long half-life, while maintaining much of the therapeutic activity of the original peptide drug. To date, data from clinical trials suggests that these compounds are safe and unlikely to elicit immune responses or immunogenicity.Until 2005, ConjuChem focused on the conjugation of peptides to albumin in vivo. In August 2005, ConjuChem announced the initiation of a new platform technology, the Preformed Conjugate (PC), which is the binding of peptides to recombinant human albumin (rHA) outside of the body, prior to injection. This new approach allows ConjuChem to adapt highly potent drug candidates, often with significant dosing or tolerability issues. As in the case of ConjuChem's in vivo technology, no immunogenic response relating to the technology is expected.PIPELINE:PC-DACTM:Exendin-4 is ConjuChem's first lead product based on the preformed conjugate platform. This GLP-1 homolog is in Phase I/II testing for the treatment of diabetes type 2 with a targeted profile of once per week administration. The Company is also studying PC- DACTM:Insulin which is in late pre-clinical stage as well as DACTM:HIV, an HIV fusion inhibitor in late research stage.
